Teaching Philosophy
Each student is unique in strengths. There are visual, aural, kinesthetic
and intellectual learners, and various combinations of all four. Lessons
will promote the strengths, already there and try to encourage and improve
the learning skills less developed.
Each student wants to reach their potential and find their own musical
voice. This is something that happens over a long period of time, with
consistent work, encouragement at home and at lessons, motivation and a
desire to make music.
A combination of skills is taught, each enhancing the other, so the whole
can come together in the best way possible. Taubman-influenced technique
offers a way to position the fingers, hands and arms to prevent injury and
solve a host of technical problems. Sight-reading, ear-training, theory,
sound production, lively rhythm and a varied repertoire are given.
It's important that a student learn how to practice, and to practice in
such a way that home-practice becomes a time of discovery, enjoyment and
satisfaction. This is done by setting goals, solving musical problems, and consistent
focused work.
